Abby is a Labrador retriever mix and has learnt how to fetch items that fall in a swimming pool without getting wet.

The Lab manages to balance on a small float that she uses to guide herself across the pool's surface. On her way to the other side she plucks the ball out of the water.

The filmer and Abby's owner Elizabeth told Newsflare: "This is Abby a Labrador retriever mix. Abby was rescued from a kill shelter. My family went to the shelter looking for an addition to our family. We saw many dogs, Abby was the only one that was calm not barking. She was in a small kennel, with a beat-up tennis ball.

"Pausing at each kennel, taking a moment to greet each dog along the way. About the sixth kennel down, there she was; a skinny black dog.

"I stopped and watched this little skinny dog as she took her beloved ball to the opposite end of her kennel, she released the ball watching it as it slowly rolled away from her then immediately came to fetch and repeat the same.

"This sweet girl came to the end of her kennel where I was, finally noticing that I did not simply pass her by. The sweet skinny dog pressed her body against the metal fence that separated us, wagging her tail and whimpering.

"We saved that sweet girl. Abby was not motivated by food only a ball. We have a pool and being a Labrador It should have been a perfect set-up for this sweet girl. Pump the brakes, she’s was afraid of water!

"Abby had a terrible life before being rescued, her life had been full of severe abuse and neglect.

"I slowly introduced her to pool life: using her beloved ball. I placed her on a bodyboard to give her relief from the hot summer weather.

"Abby did the rest, learning how to move her bodyboard to get her beloved ball from the pool."
