African soccer player attacked and racially abused by crowd at game in India
An African footballer was attacked and racially abused by pitch invaders during a game in India.
Dairrassouba Hassane Junior from the Ivory Coast was playing five-a-side football for a local tournament when he angered some of the spectators while taking the corner kick with his team leading by a goal in Kerala on March 10.
Footage shows the chaotic moment athlete Dairrassouba was chased and beaten by a furious mob while the others tried to shield him.
Aside from being physically attacked, some of the men also allegedly shouted racial slurs at him.
The footballer filed a complaint with the Malappuram police on March 13, saying:
"I went near the corner flag for taking the kick, and the locals and the audience called me a monkey. One among the audience threw a stone at me, and it hit my head.
"When I turned back, two more stones were hurled at me and they started screaming at me. Those people who threw stones at me were saying f**k African monkey, black cat.
"In order to save my life, I ran away. The supporters and those belonging to the opposite team hurled stones at me. They hit me brutally. I escaped after supporters of my team intervened and stopped them."
Officials and concerned onlookers helped control the situation by blocking some of the punches and breaking the mob away.
Dairrassouba played for the Jawahar Mavoor football team in a mini-football game organized by the Indian Sevens Football Association (SFA).
Meanwhile, an officer from the Areekode police said an investigation is underway following the incident.
