Protests erupted over a nurse who was allegedly murdered by a man she rejected in India.

Priya Mishra, 21, was found lifeless, lying in a pool of blood near the Sonai River bridge tsix miles from Saifai Medical College, where she studied nursing in Uttar Pradesh, on March 14.

Her alleged killer, Mahendra Batham, who was her neighbour who reportedly had been stalking her, was arrested a day later.

Devastated classmates and teachers staged a protest outside the hospital to demand justice for Priya.

Footage shows the crime scene when police first found the nurse. A large crowd of students, teachers, and staff from the college also gathered outside the hospital after her body was found.

Etawah Police Superintendent Santosh Kumar Verma said: ‘The victim was a first-year nursing student at Saifai Medical College. She was found dead along the Etawah-Saifai route.

‘Investigations found that Mahendra had been stalking the victim and harboured intentions of marrying her.

‘We believe she may have been shot at close range or assaulted with a sharp object around her neck.

‘We have identified the suspect as Mahendra along with his brother Arvind, who is currently evading authorities.'

Priya was allegedly lured away from the college, which led to a confrontation.

Superintendent Santosh added: ‘'The investigation is ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining suspect, Arvind.'

Priya's death sparked thousands to protest outside the hospital, saying the ‘law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh is deteriorating.'

Akhilesh Yadav, the head of the Samajwadi Party, said: ‘The death of a student under suspicious circumstances at Saifai University is a matter of grave concern. This is yet another distressing instance highlighting the failure of the declared zero-tolerance policy against crime, particularly during the tenure of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

'A judicial inquiry into this alleged murder is imperative to unveil the truth about individuals involved in incidents similar to those at BHU and Saifai University.

'The government should not have the ability to shield them, even if it desires to do so. The BJP government is neither able to honour the women nor save their lives.'
