The Philippines beats India in world record for biggest human lung formation
The Philippines set the world record for the biggest lung formation, beating India.
Officials said 5,596 participants wore colour-coordinated shirts and hats to form the top-view image depicting the internal organs at gathered at the Quirino grandstand wearing in Manila on March 16.
Footage shows the residents organising themselves before the two red lungs connected by green veins formed, as seen from an aerial view.
The Guinness World Records said they considered the number of participants, the form of the human lung, and that there should be no gaps in the organ during the recording.
It gave the Department of Health, the government agency spearheading the event, three attempts, and they made it on their second try.
Health Secretary Ted Herbs said: ‘We showed all of our countrymen that if we want something, we can do it. The idea was to spread awareness of World Tuberculosis Day. There is still TB, but there should be no stigma to it. It can be treated.'
The previous record was set by India in 2017 and was joined by 5,007 schoolchildren which aimed to create awareness about harmful effects of air pollution on the lungs.
India consistently has some of the world's worst air, with Delhi in the north regularly ranking more than 25 times the safe levels set by the World Health Organisation.
