Black swan cygnets hatch in first successful breeding at Thai zoo
Zookeepers welcomed three newly hatched black swan cygnets at a zoo in Thailand.
Staff introduced the adorable young birds to the public during a press conference at the zoo in Khon Kaen province on February 21.
Zoo director Tipawadee Kittikoon said: 'Khon Kaen Zoo is home to a male and female black swan, both around seven years old.
'They were previously under the care of a private zoo in northeastern Thailand before being transferred to Khon Kaen Zoo on September 9, 2020.
'For the first time since arriving, the female black swan laid eggs in December 2023, after the breeding season.
'These eggs successfully hatched on February 9 and 10 and have been meticulously cared for by the veterinary team and relevant personnel at Khon Kaen Zoo.'
The zookeeper added that the swans were well cared for, with nutritious food and regular baths, walks, and exercise.
Black swans are commonly found in the wetlands of southwestern and southeastern Australia, as well as adjacent coastal islands such as New South Wales, Western Australia, and Tasmania.
They reach maturity at around two years old and construct their own nests using tree branches and dry leaves.
During breeding season, they typically lay around five to six eggs at a time.
Black swans often feed together in small herds, consuming small marine animals, plants, and seeds in brackish and seawater habitats.
