A Filipino sailor was rescued after falling from a trawler at pier in Thailand.

Jonas Reyes, 44, was unloading fish from the Panama-registered trawler when he lost his balance near the vessel's sling railing and fell 26 feet onto the cement floor of the port in Samut Prakan province on March 16.

Medics rushed to the scene to give first aid to the worker who suffered a serious leg injury. They then took him to Bang Pakok Hospital 3 for further treatment.

Security guard San Chanjem, 55, who saw Jonas plummet to the ground, said: 'I saw him falling from near the trawler's control room area. I couldn't tell if his body hit the stairs or the concrete edge.

'Onlookers immediately rushed to his aid.

'The injured individual was a foreign national, and the vessel he fell from was a Panamanian fish tanker. It was the first time I had ever witnessed such an incident at the port.'

Port maintenance staff Rattasak, 40, said: 'My colleagues and I helped by throwing a lifebuoy and trying to lift the Filipino man out of the water. He was big so it proved to be challenging. We had to wait for him to drift closer before dragging him to a more accessible location.'

Jonas was still in the hospital and recovering from his injuries.
