Climate Activists Toss Orange Confetti at Emily Thornberry Event in London, UK
This footage was filmed and produced 19 March 2024.
[Note: video contains subtitles]
Just Stop Oil activists again confronted Emily Thornberry, the Labour front-bencher and Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales, at a public event. The two supporters demanded Thornberry's commitment to leaving the Labour party if, after six months of forming government, they fail to revoke the Tory oil licences granted since 2021.
During the event, as Thornberry was delivering her remarks, the activists threw orange confetti and addressed the assembly, urging Thornberry to take action to cancel the oil and gas licences that contribute to global warming and climate catastrophe. Members of the audience expressed their support for this call, with many saying "hear, hear!" in agreement.
After the activists were escorted from the room, Thornberry responded to the incident by mentioning previous protests at her home and events. She emphasized her willingness to engage in discussions about the issues but expressed displeasure at being personally attacked for global issues.
One of the activists, Genevieve Shanahan, a university lecturer in Management and Sustainability, explained her motivation for confronting Thornberry. Shanahan highlighted the urgency of canceling the fossil fuel licences to prevent irreversible damage to the environment, criticizing the Labour Party for backing out of their climate commitments.
Another activist, Casper from North London, who is an ex-Labour member, echoed the sentiment of disappointment in the Labour Party's lack of action on climate change. He criticized the party for prioritizing fossil fuel lobbyists over the well-being of the public and the environment.
Just Stop Oil's efforts to hold politicians accountable for their climate policies have gained attention, with the group's members willing to take action to ensure a sustainable future.
