Two people were killed and many more were trapped when a building collapsed in India this morning.

The two-storey property housing a jeans factory gave way at around 2:15 am local time in the Welcome district of Delhi.

Workers Arshad Ahmad, 32, and Tawheed Ahams, 20, were found dead in the rubble. A third worker, Rehan Ahmad, 22, was critically injured.

Police said they were searching through the debris for others believed to have been trapped.

In footage from the scene, one local is heard saying 'please do not crowd this area'.

Another added: 'Please wear the helmet, brother. It is important for your safety.'

North East Deputy Commissioner of Police, Joy Tirkey said: 'The ground floor was being used for jeans cutting, but the first floor was vacant.'

The policeman said officers were searching for the owner of the building and
legal proceedings are pending.

He added: 'Besides this, the authorities are conducting further investigations to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.'

Anoop Singh from the Delhi Fire Service said four vehicles were deployed for the rescue operation.
