An opposition leader has been arrested over corruption just weeks before elections are held in India.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is seen in the video being driven away in white police cars after being led out of his home on Thursday night.

The politician from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is one of the fiercest critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

His house was raided by the federal financial crimes agency in what supporters claim are politically motivated charges.

The country's Enforcement Directorate (ED) is scheduled to present the minister before a special PMLA court on Friday to secure his remand for questioning while in custody.

The development has sparked widespread criticism from opposition parties, including those within the India alliance, of which the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is a member. Kejriwal'sarrest comes just days before the Lok Sabha elections, adding a twist of political complexity to the situation.

Kejriwal had allegedly ignored repeated summons by the ED, alleging that they were unlawful and politically motivated.

He had reportedly evaded at least nine summons in relation to two separate cases, including the Delhi Jal Board.

The ED has accused Kejriwal of colluding with individuals to devise an excise policy that provided them with unwarranted benefits in exchange for 'kickbacks' to the AAP.

Following the Delhi High Court's refusal to prevent his arrest, ED officers arrived at Kejriwal's residence on March 21 to request his cooperation in the investigation.

Phones belonging to Kejriwal and his wife were reportedly confiscated.

In response to his detention, the Aam Aadmi Party has filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking to overturn the decision.

Despite his incarceration, Kejriwal will continue to fulfill his duties as Chief Minister, as confirmed by Delhi minister Atishi.

After the arrest of Kejriwal, the Delhi Assembly cancelled the sitting that was originally scheduled for Friday.

The assembly will now convene at 11 am on March 27.
