Amazing night-time animation footage has emerged from Nicaragua of a volcano erupting, firing lava into the air while lightning can be seen in the ash cloud.

The video, filmed on Sunday, shows the Momotombo Volcano exploding into action while lightning sparks in the ash cloud, known as a dirty thunderstorm. The eruption was produced as a night-time, colour animation making it even more spectacular.

Later in the video we also see a plume of ash pouring out of the crater at rapid pace.

The filmer apparently took risks to capture the footage, later writing online: "The location east of the volcano from which the footage was taken is only reachable by a network of dirt tracks.

"Local police approached us and warned of a high risk of robbery so frequent repositioning and keeping a low profile was necessary to reduce the risk."

The volcano awakened most recently in 2015.

Momotombo volcano is located on the north shore of Lago de Managua, Nicaragua. Its magestic conical edifice is 1,297 m (4,255 ft) high and capable of eruption with devastating effect. In 1610, the old city of Leon was abandoned after a massive eruption, and powerful eruptions also occurred in 1886 and 1905. The volcano reawakened in 2015 and the video, which includes the first nighttime colour animation of an explosive event and also daytime footage, documents the presently sporadic explosive activity in the early hours of the morning and after sunrise on 21 February 2016.
