Senegal's little-known opposition leader Bassirou Diomaye Faye, 44, has been elected as the country's president less than two weeks after being released from prison to run in the election.

While official results of the vote, which took place on Sunday, were not yet available, the former prime minister, who was the other favourite and had the backing of incumbent President Macky Sall, conceded defeat based on the preliminary results.

The victory of Faye, the number two of main opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, reflects frustration among young people over high unemployment and concerns about governance in the West African nation.

This footage illustrates various polling stations in Dakar.
