This footage was filmed and produced 17 August 2023.

The two ice fields stretching across the Patagonian region of the Andes harbour forty times more ice than all the glaciers in the European Alps. Using state-of-the-art methods and the scarce data available to date, a team led by Johannes Furst of the Institute of Geography at FAU (Friedrich Alexander Universitat). Came to this conclusion after re-estimating the volume of both ice fields at 5,351 cubic kilometres in 2000. The researchers have published their findings in Communications Earth & Environment. The Patagonian ice fields definitely dwarf the European glaciers. This is clear just by looking at their enormous dimensions: the Northern Patagonian Icefield alone is approximately 120 kilometres long and, in some places, between 50 and 70 kilometres wide. The Southern Patagonian Ice Field is more than three times as large and extends over an area of approximately 350 kilometres from north to south with an average width of 30 to 40 kilometres. The ice masses have an average thickness of more than 250 metres, which makes them about five times thicker than the glaciers of the European Alps. Added to this is an unusual and sometimes extreme climate.
