Storyline:
United Nations (UN) officials and several UN member states' representatives have emphasized that the newly-adopted resolution by the UN Security Council on a ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza Strip must be implemented and honored.

The Security Council adopted a resolution that demands an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The resolution was passed with 14 votes in favor among the 15 members of the Council. The United States, which had previously vetoed three draft resolutions that would have called for or demanded a ceasefire in Gaza, abstained on Monday, allowing the draft to pass.

In face of questioning by Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on the legal force of the resolution, UN officials reiterated that the Security Council resolutions are legally binding.

Vasily Nebenzia, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that the Security Council resolutions should be implemented as required in UN Charter, describing the statement of U.S. representative to UN as a "joke".

There were envoys from other UN member states who expressed their views in support of implementation of the Security Council resolution.

Article 25 of the UN Charter states that member states agree to accept and implement the resolutions of the Security Council in accordance with the provisions of the Charter.

Experts believe that the Gaza ceasefire resolution passed by the Security Council clearly requires ceasefire in the operative paragraph, which is a legally binding statement, so all UN member states are obliged to implement the resolution in accordance with Article 25 of the Charter.
