STORYLINE:
Turkish police on Tuesday detained 147 people suspected of being members of the Islamic State (IS) group in nationwide operations, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.
Yerlikaya said on the social media platform X that the police detained the suspects in simultaneous operations across 30 provinces and seized a large amount of foreign currency, organizational documents, and digital materials.
The suspects have allegedly carried out armed activities in conflict zones and provided financial support for the IS, said the minister.
Yerlikaya further revealed that Türkiye had conducted a total of 1,329 anti-terror operations against the IS group between June 1 of last year and March 25 of this year.
He announced that within the scope of these operations, 2,919 suspects had been apprehended, with 692 of them arrested. He added that 531 suspects were placed under judicial control, while judicial procedures for 187 individuals were still ongoing.
Türkiye has stepped up operations against IS terrorists after the group attacked an Istanbul church in late January, killing a civilian during Sunday morning mass.
The Turkish government designated the IS as a terrorist organization in 2013 and blamed it for a spate of deadly attacks in the country since 2015.
In December of last year, Turkish intelligence and security forces captured a high-ranking IS terrorist responsible for overseeing the group's finances in Türkiye's southeastern province of Mersin.
