Drunk driver crashes car into beauty clinic injuring staff
This is the dramatic moment a drunk driver crashed into a beauty clinic injuring two staff in Thailand.
Shocking CCTV footage shows a red sedan breaking through the glass entrance and smashing into the reception desk of the clinic in Lopburi province on March 20.
A quick-thinking employee managed to escape the impact, but another clerk was slammed against the wall behind her. Various appliances, furniture, and motorcycles were also damaged.
Clinic owner Dr. Kannat Kusonsuk, 49, said she was away when the accident happened. She called the police when staff notified her of the crash.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Ekawit Thongthum of the Muang Lopburi Police Station said officers arrested the sedan driver Boonyen, who was found to have a blood alcohol level of 214 mg per cent - more than four times the legal limit of 50 mg per cent.
Speaking to local media, clinic employee Anusara Sirichan said the accident had 'traumatised her'.
She said: 'The car hit both the clinic and the adjacent beauty salon. My co-worker, Nalin, must now take time off to treat her injury. She had wounds on her arm from being cut by glass, and her whole body was sore from the impact. As for me, right now I still feel frightened whenever I see a car driving past the shop.'
Dr. Kannat said the estimated damages were estimated at 500,000 baht (10,880 GBP). Medical bills and repairs for her employees' motorcycles would add to the bill. However, she claimed Boonyen had not compensated them for the accident.
Another staff member Waraporn Poonsiri, 44, said it was not the first time a car had crashed into the clinic.
She said: 'We were lucky this time that there were no serious injuries. To those who drink and drive, I hope you know that you are endangering not just yourself but also other people.'
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
