Footage shows hailstones the size of pigeon eggs pelting down from the sky and demolishing a driver's rear windshield.

Smartphone footage captured during a traffic jam on a busy road in the city of Yiwu, in Zhejiang, eastern China, shows the massive ice crystals dropping on the vehicle on March 25.

In the next scene, the rear windscreen could be seen getting completely devastated as the hailstones continued to fall from the sky.

Many concerned drivers whose vehicles were damaged during the hailstorm, resorted to social media to get information about whether they would be entitled to compensation for the damages.

An insurance company expert told Chinese media: 'Generally if there is car damage insurance, compensation can be obtained.'

'More than 2,000 cases have been reported, and a hotline has been established for expedited manual claims processing.'
