"Before the war, the Taiz area was developing rapidly, with a booming construction industry and a strong supply and demand market. However, since the war broke out, the demand for construction in Taiz has significantly decreased. Many roads were destroyed and closed in the war. Nobody wants to launch new construction projects here."

"If you came here before the war, you would see a very different scene. The health system was basically problem-free. Hospitals had ample medical facilities and dialysis supplies. Complications like viral infections in patients with kidney failure were very rare to see. Tragically, as the war came, the health system here has also descended into chaos, and I don't know when we can get rid of this situation.";

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdul Bari Taher, writer (partially overlaid with shot 7/ending with shot 8):
"Before the war, Yemen registered freedom and prosperity in culture. The prosperity of culture stemmed from the prosperity of people's daily life. Then the war destroyed everything, including people's life. The activities of writers' union came to a halt, and so did the society activities of journalists and doctors. Almost all civil societies stopped their activities.";

Meanwhile, many sports facilities were damaged in the war."

11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Aidroos Muhammad, truck driver:
"It was easy to have unimpeded transportation across the country before the war. However, as the war has lasted for years, freight transport has become very difficult, and sometimes we even run at a loss. You don't know where a battle broke out and block the road. Whether the goods can be delivered depends entirely on luck."

Storyline:
Years of war has severely damaged social development and people's life in Yemen in all aspects, with more than half of its population of 33 million in urgent need of aid.

The civil war in the country erupted in late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthis seized control of much of the country's north and forced the internationally recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.

Taiz, a city in southwestern Yemen, has been always a frontline battleground, with many roads blocked and people in destitution over the past years.

The war has thrown Yemen's health system into chaos.

The war has also stagnated the development of culture and sports and affected transport in Yemen.
