STORYLINE:
As Easter is approaching, the streets of Zagreb are decorated with vibrant colors and symbols of Easter.
In a tradition with a history of over 100 years, people in Croatia are decorating Easter eggs. They are a symbol of a new life, a new beginning.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Croatian): TEA SISKO, Curator, Ethnographic Museum Zagreb
"Coloring and decorating eggs is certainly one of the most recognizable and widespread Easter customs.
The pre-Christian origins of this tradition must be emphasized, as evidenced by many archaeological findings, and over time, the symbolism of the new life carried by the egg harmoniously merged with Easter Christian customs."
In Zagreb, the Ethnographic Museum has taken the Easter festivities to another level with its exhibition of illuminated Easter eggs.
Nestled within the museum's halls, these illuminated eggs offer a captivating glimpse into Croatia's cultural traditions, showcasing the fusion of old-world charm with modern innovation.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Croatian): DIJANA NAZOR CORDA, Author of the exhibition
"This is a multimedia exhibition of Easter eggs that shows 26 works made of white and red clay, which is naturally baked ceramics.
I was inspired by the old Croatian heritage, with braids that I perforated into holes and with little birds.
What is special and unique about this exhibition is that the Easter eggs are illuminated for the first time with light that symbolizes consecration, new life, birth, and spring.
That light gives a special magic to this exhibition, and it is truly original and unique for that."
