Ride-hailing app Grab opens booth at Bangkok's main airport
Singaporean ride-hailing app Grab has scored two sucker punches on the Thai taxi cartels by opening booths in the capital city's lucrative airports.
Local cabbies once monopolised Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) and the Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) serving Bangkok, Thailand.
But the Nasdaq-listed firm - which continues to face Luddite-esque violence from local drivers - has now opened booths at both airports as it continues its growth in the country.
Footage shows the new Grab booth at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, which served more than 50 million passengers in 2023 across international routes.
Airports of Thailand (AoT) said it had introduced Grab taxi booths to give passengers more choices to get to and from their destinations.
Grab is now hoping to break the cartels at other popular domestic airports such as Krabi, Phuket, Koh Samui, Chumphon and more.
The firm operates in eight Southeast Asian countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
It has expanded in recent years to food delivery, couriers and financial services.
