Well wishers donate daily necessities to flood-stricken areas in Brazil
This footage was filmed and produced 28 March 2024.
Well wishers in Brazil have spontaneously organized to donate daily necessities to heavy disaster-stricken areas caused by heavy rains, while relevant authorities are working around the clock to pack them up and send to those in need.
At least 27 people have died in southeast Brazil and six others remain missing due to heavy downpours that began on Friday, local media reported.
Meanwhile, the heavy rains have forced more than 8,000 to flee their homes, the reports cited official sources as saying.
The states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro have been hardest hit, registering 19 and eight deaths respectively from flooding and landslides.
Heavy rains also lashed the states of Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo, with no casualties reported so far.
A China Central Television (CCTV) reporter visited a supply distribution center in Espirito Santo, where he saw residents and organizations voluntarily coming to donate supplies.
"Floods and heavy rains have caused disasters. We should pool all our efforts together in times like these," said Vanusa Santos, head of a water supply company union in Victoria City, capital of Espirito Santo.
"We know that this is a tough time, and our modest donation is a great way to meet the needs of the victims," said Pricila, an architect in Victoria City.
According to local authorities, the focus of relief efforts in Espirito Santo has shifted from searching for victims to helping them return home. The local fire brigade has set up two donation points for relief supplies and has provided more than 8,000 food packs, over 10,000 mattresses and more than 6,000 sets of cleaning and personal care products to people in the affected areas.
