STORYLINE: 

Chinese volunteers are devoted to protecting birds from collision with buildings, one of main threats for birds in cities.

Sun Zhi, head of youth program of national anti-bird collision action alliance, has been engaged in bird collision survey for three year.

With the help of volunteers, they have conducted daily bird watching and data collection, and held exhibition to arouse public attention on the issue.

"The main reason for launching the project is that there is actually a lack of data in this area in China. Our main work is to organize the volunteers of children and adults in Chongqing and various cities in southwest China every year to do some work. They will first select some buildings for the research, and then monitor them to see if there are any bird collisions and how many incidents are there, and conduct an environmental monitoring of these buildings."

According to the 2023 annual report of national anti-bird collision action alliance, over 1,800 volunteers from more than 160 cities in China have joined surveys since 2021.

Sun said that the recorded data will offer scientific support for the establishment of anti-bird collision facilities and the planning of bird-friendly buildings.
