Palestinian security medical sources said the Israeli army on Monday withdrew from the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City after two weeks of military operation, leaving dozens of deaths and massive destruction.

The security sources told Xinhua that most of the hospital buildings were destroyed, burned, and attacked by the Israeli army, which turned the hospital out of service.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic): OM ALI, Resident in Gaza City
"We used to live in al-Zaitoun neighborhood, but our house was demolished by the Israeli army and we fled to this (Shifa) hospital. When the Israeli army invaded, my son was staying in the car (in the hospital compound). When he saw the tank, he informed us that the Israelis had broken in. After the Israeli army invaded, the soldiers informed us not to go near the windows for safety reasons. They asked everyone in the hospital to come to the stairs. We stayed on the stairs for three days without water or food. We didn't eat or drink much for three days. We couldn't move at all. After this, the Israeli army took away adult men from the hospital."

On March 18, the Israeli army carried out a sudden large-scale military operation on the Shifa hospital, the largest medical complex in Gaza, under the pretext that Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) used the hospital for military operations against Israel.
