Baltimore Harbor witnessed a collaborative effort on Saturday as multiple Defense Department assets, along with state, federal, and private sector agencies, commenced the task of clearing wreckage from the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
Under the coordination of the U.S. Coast Guard through the Unified Command, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh confirmed the Defense Department's commitment to supporting the comprehensive response in Baltimore. This collaborative endeavor involves agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Navy, and various other stakeholders.
Highly skilled demolition crews wasted no time in initiating the process of cutting into the collapsed bridge's north side, while the Army Corps of Engineers conducted a vital underwater survey—a prerequisite for debris removal.
The Naval Sea Systems Command has contributed to the operation by mobilizing specialized vessels, including the 1,000-ton lift capacity derrick barge Chesapeake, the 200-ton lift capacity revolving crane barge Ferrell, and the 150-ton lift capacity crane barge Oyster Bay, all stationed in Baltimore Harbor. An additional 400-ton lift capacity barge is slated to arrive next week, further bolstering the removal efforts.
Coast Guard Captain David O'Connell, the federal on-scene coordinator for Key Bridge Response 2024, announced plans for establishing a temporary alternate channel to facilitate the passage of commercially essential vessels, marking a crucial milestone in the endeavor to reopen the Port of Baltimore.
The Unified Command comprises over 1,000 specialists from various disciplines, including engineering, construction, contracting, and operations, with support from agencies such as the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Maryland Transportation Authority, the Maryland State Police, and private sector crisis management firms.
As efforts continue to restore normalcy, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh reiterated the Defense Department's readiness to provide ongoing assistance, emphasizing solidarity with the people of Baltimore in their journey towards recovery and rebuilding.
