Woman shocked to find local supermarket selling basic veggie platter for $45
A woman was left stunned when she found her local supermarket was selling plates of fruit and vegetables for £26 (CA$45).
Nikita Cekay, 24, came across the item - a tray of chopped cucumber, celery, carrots and cauliflower - at her local Metro supermarket in her home city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Nikita, an art director, said: "I was shocked, honestly! I kept saying 'no way'."
"I've always known grocery stores will sell prepared food at a higher price tag but it just wasn't even close to being on the higher end of pricey-but-still-doable."
Nikita uploaded a video to TikTok - which now has more than 800K views - and many online shared her disbelief.
One comment read: "You could literally buy all the veggies along with the knife and chopping board to cut them up with for that price."
Another said: "A bag of baby carrots is like $2.99. A cucumber is like $2.00… that’s insane"
Nikita hasn't seen any huge price increases like this one since but says that Canada have been having a spate of gradual price increases.
She said: "Yes, things are getting pricey."
"There's a whole political conversation to be had that I won't get into."
"I get with these kind of things they are paying a prep employee to package these, so there should be an upcharge."
"But if we try to compare that number to how much buying the items themselves will cost, that upcharge is totally unrealistic in this example."
"I hope that these grocery stores are paying their employees fair compensation because they deserve it."
"We know that upcharge is not directly benefiting them as much as we would be lead to think they are."
