42 years of the South Atlantic war between the United Kingdom and Argentina
This footage was filmed and produced 5 April 2023.
This April 2 marks the commemoration in Argentina of the Day of the Veterans and the Fallen in the Malvinas War, known as the Falklands by the United Kingdom, a date that commemorates the war for the sovereignty of the archipelago. The commemoration, which is 42 years old, was established by Law 25.370, passed by the National Congress in November 2000, during the presidency of Fernando de la Rua. The aim of the day is to pay tribute to all those who took part in this war, which took place in 1982 and lasted 74 days.
In 2024, Malvinas veterans are particularly alarmed. It so happens that Argentina has a president, Javier Milei, who openly proclaimed his admiration for former British premier Margaret Thatcher. In turn, the vice-president, Victoria Villarruel, boasts a nationalist profile and is the daughter of a former combatant. But veterans remember Eduardo Marcelo Villarruel, the vice-president's father, who in the Malvinas War was the second in command of the 602nd Commando Company, behind Aldo Rico.
To this context must be added the decision to cancel the annual parade of veterans of the Malvinas War (falklands for the United Kingdom), the government said it was to save the funds needed to hold the ceremony.
