A British tourist has been arrested for allegedly crashing into a motorcycle and injuring three locals while he was drunk.

Ashton James Ellison, 38, from Liverpool, was riding a scooter back to his hotel when he hit another rider with two passengers in Pattaya, Thailand, in the early hours of this morning.

CCTV shows how the locals, on a white Honda, slammed into the ground while Ashton was seen skidding forwards before colliding with a row of parked bikes.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene before all four were taken to hospital. However, Ashton was arrested when he allegedly tried to flee.

Officers have now remanded him custody while they investigate the smash.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Saijai Kamchula of Pattaya City Police Station said: 'I have inspected the scene and gathered the images as evidence. We have also reviewed nearby security cameras.

'Regarding the foreign suspect, we have detained him to conduct alcohol level testing for legal proceedings as was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.

'The injured people have been treated at the hospital and we are waiting for their medical reports. The severity of injuries will affect the severity of the charges.'

Officers said they received a report of the crash in front of Wat Chai Mongkhon temple at 3.16 AM.

Motorcycle taxi rider Nirun Promsiri, 35, was at the scene with light injuries.

Passengers Lakkhana Janwangthong, 30, and Ning Janwangthong, 25, both suffered severe injuries from their heads hitting the ground. They were not wearing helmets.

Onlookers who crowded round said that Ashton appeared to be intoxicated. He had a wound on his head and his black Honda Click motorcycle was damaged.

Paramedics gave them first aid before driving them to a nearby hospital.

Injured rider Nirun said he was making a turn to park his motorcycle in front of the temple when the tourist crashed into the back of them. The impact caused both passengers to fly in different directions and sustain severe injuries.

Speaking at the end of the video, he said: 'I picked up the customers and they told me to drop them at the temple because they wanted to pray at the temple festival.

'But when I turned a little bit to drop them off, another motorcycle came very fast. He was a foreigner. He looked like he was drunk. There was a sound like 'boom'. The foreigner looked like he was seriously injured.

'The foreigner was coming in the same direction, parallel to me. I am sure that he was likely intoxicated.

'I used my indicator and the foreigner didn't make an effort to avoid hitting me.'

Former fishing village Pattaya first became popular with American troops on 'rest and relaxation' breaks in the 1960s when the U.S. military had bases in Thailand. But in the ensuing years, the coastal resort spawned into a semi-barbarous sex and drugs Mecca.

Embarrassed officials have made progress in gentrifying the region with family tourism projects but a ravenous nightlife industry remains, with undesirables from all nations still attracted to the seedy city.
