Syrian residents denounce Israeli airstrikes on Iranian consulate building
Storyline:
Residents in Damascus, Syria expressed outrage at Israel's deadly airstrike on an Iranian diplomatic premise in the Syrian capital, calling out the incident as a serious threat to security.
Iran has vowed to retaliate following the Monday bombing of the consulate building of the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, which killed 13 people, including seven members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
The Syrian Defense Ministry said the missile attack occurred at about 17:00 local time (1400 GMT) when Israel launched an aerial aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
As Syrian authorities remove the rubble of the Iranian consulate and assess the damage to surrounding buildings, the attack is still the talk of Damascus, especially in the Mezzeh area where many foreign embassies are located.
Many see it as a violation of international law as terror grips the population.
Some Middle East observers fear there will be an escalation of regional tension.
Israel has previously acknowledged targeting Iranian forces in Syria. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi insisted that "This cowardly crime will not go unanswered."
The Iranian mission to the United Nations also condemned the attack and said it was "a threat to security and stability," not only in Damascus but also in the region, which has witnessed unprecedented tensions after Hamas attacked Israel last October.
