Conservationists appeal for volunteers to help preserve the pika
Conservationists appealed for volunteers to help preserve the pika.
Animal lovers from the Oregon Zoo called for volunteers to join the Cascades Pika Watch initiative, which is dedicated to safeguarding the American pika population in the Columbia River Gorge.
The potato-sized members of the rabbit family are known not only for their endearing appearance but also for their distinctive squeak-toy alarm calls echoing across the rugged terrain of the Gorge.
The group said the animals are vital indicators of environmental health and play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation efforts, particularly in the face of climate change challenges.
Cascades Pika Watch invites volunteers to help locate and map pika populations in the region. Through free crash courses offered on May 9, 10, and 11, participants will learn how to identify pikas and actively contribute to the project's mission.
Dr Johanna Varner, the scientific advisor for Cascades Pika Watch, said: 'Beyond their undeniable appeal, pikas serve as valuable subjects for studying the impacts of climate change on ecosystems.
'Their habitat preferences make them particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures, making monitoring efforts crucial for their survival.'
Members would scan boulders for signs of pika activity and listen for their characteristic calls along public hiking trails. They would also provide invaluable data that informs conservation strategies and protects these beloved animals' habitats.
The initiative offers both in-person and virtual training options, ensuring accessibility for all nature enthusiasts eager to contribute to the conservation efforts.
