This is the moment a brand new iPhone erupted in smoke after a dumbbell accidentally fell on top of it, forcing the gym to be evacuated.

Personal trainer Kyle Counts was finishing up some triceps extensions at a gym in Scapoose, Oregon, USA, on January 6 when his phone fell out of his pocket.

In footage that has been viewed more than 480,000 times, Kyle drops the 90lb dumbbell he was holding on to the floor not knowing the iPhone 15 Pro Max was there.

Clearly devastated, Kyle’s frustration quickly turned to concern as the device started smoking in his hand before he ran out of the gym carrying it to safety.

Kyle said: “I was initially annoyed but the screen was still on and working until it lit up like a roman candle in my hand.

“Obviously first instinct was drop the phone but when I saw it wasn't just smoking but started sparking I grabbed it as fast as I could and ran outside through the emergency exit.

“The phone kept sparking so I tried to kick it with my foot into a puddle to submerge it to hopefully put out the fire. It just boiled in the water for a bit before finally smouldering out.

“I didn't really have time to think about anything apart from getting that smoke out of the gym as fast as possible. Unfortunately the entire gym had to be evacuated.

“I have dropped a dumbbell on my phone twice and broke it in the car door twice. Not this make and model but they have never emitted any smoke or gas before.

“At first I thought I just cracked the screen as the phone had fallen out of my pocket during the lift and landed upside down.”
