Storyline:
Residents on the east coast of China's Taiwan are piecing their belongings back together after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake jolted the island's Hualien County on Wednesday.

The quake struck at 7:58 a.m. Wednesday (Beijing Time), with the epicenter just 11 kilometers south of Hualien, a county of some 100,000 people.

Crockery stalls were doing brisk business at a market in the county on Thursday, with many residents' seeking new kitchenware after their collections were shattered by the tremors. Shop owners welcomed the influx of customers.

Close by, authorities have begun demolishing work on unsalvageable buildings, some of which are left severely tilted.

Volunteer Huang Yaonan was among those who rushed to the scene in Hualien, joining the effort to help shelter those left without a place to stay.

The death toll following the earthquake has risen to 12, local authorities said on Friday.
