Abort! Abort! Turkish Airlines pilots abort landing at Birmingham Airport TWICE before they are diverted in Storm Kathleen crosswinds

This was the extreme moment Turkish Airlines pilots aborted landing, TWICE at Birmingham International Airport.

Gale-force 50mph crosswinds buffeted the aircraft from side to side as it approached the runway on Sunday 7 April.

The flight, from Istanbul to the West Midlands airport, was scheduled to land at 09:45, however on approach, the aircraft was knocked around and the pilots aborted their first attempt.

The crew performed a 'go around' before lining up and attempting again at 10:04, however this time the winds had picked up and the turbulence was even worse, causing the pilots to once again abort landing.

The flight was then diverted to London's Gatwick airport, where it successfully landed at 10:50am, an hour after its scheduled arrival time in Birmingham.

Gatwick is approximately 140 miles to Birmingham by road, or 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Other pilots also struggled to land in the turbulent crosswinds including those piloting a Tui flight from Toulouse which also went around the first time, but successfully landed on the second run and an Aer Lingus crew who's light propeller plane from Belfast was rocked by the buffeting crosswinds.

Storm Kathleen has hit many parts of the UK and wind speeds have been in excess of 70mph in some areas.
