Zookeepers have welcomed seven new endangered baby condors at the Oregon Zoo.

Travis Koons, steward of the zoo's avian populations and northwest species recovery endeavours, said the births were 'remarkable'.

He said: 'All seven chicks are eating well and growing stronger every day.'

The conservationist said the fledglings, mere fuzzballs for now, hold the promise of soaring to great heights in the coming years.

He said the California condor's journey from the brink of extinction is a testament to the power of conservation efforts.

Initially listed in the Endangered Species Act in 1973, the majestic birds faced a perilous decline until intervention saved them from oblivion.

Today, thanks to programs like those at the Oregon Zoo, the California condor population stands at around 500 individuals, with the majority taking flight in their natural habitat.
