Terrifying moment woman falls into missing panel on supermarket’s escalator in China
A woman fell into a missing panel on a supermarket’s escalator in eastern China.
Terrifying CCTV footage filmed in Shanghai on April 4, shows a woman stepping onto an upward-moving escalator, only to fall through the missing panel.
As the escalator continued its relentless motion, two bystanders quickly intervened, pressing the emergency stop button to halt the disaster in its tracks.
The firefighters arrived at the scene by 16:46, only to find the woman's situation dire, with her lower body tragically ensnared by the escalator. The complexity of the escalator's inner workings, featuring drive shafts, guide systems, brakes, and chains, made a direct rescue impossible.
Guided by the escalator maintenance personnel, the firefighters embarked on a delicate operation. They began by dismantling the escalator's moving panels with a screwdriver, followed by the use of an electric expander and hydraulic support rods to carefully free the trapped woman. After more than 30 minutes of tense efforts, the woman was finally rescued and rushed to the hospital.
According to the woman's husband, Mr. Lu, the accident was precipitated by a missing panel on the escalator which his wife unwittingly stepped on, causing her to plunge into the machinery.
Currently in the ICU, she faces a gruesome aftermath with flesh torn from her body, necessitating debridement and skin graft surgeries, with the risk of infection and potential amputation looming large.
The supermarket has been shuttered, and local authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to identify any safety hazards related to the escalator. A staff member acknowledged the malfunctioning escalator, admitting to its defects while deferring to experts for a comprehensive analysis.
