Six months on, Gazans continue to face humanitarian crisis amid elusive peace
This footage was filmed and produced 1 April 2024.
Storyline:
Six months into the escalation of conflict in the Gaza Strip, most of the coastal enclave's 2.3 million residents face unprecedented hardships with over 33,000 killed and 75,000 injured.
The ongoing Israeli attacks have brought the Palestinian death toll to 33,175 and injuries to 75,886 since the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out on Oct 7, 2023, the Ministry of Health in Gaza announced Sunday.
With over 85 percent of Gaza's population displaced, and large parts of the enclave destroyed, the United Nations has repeated its warnings that Gazans are enduring horrifying levels of hunger, amid growing calls for a ceasefire.
Over the past six months, the residents of Gaza have repeatedly evacuated from one area to another in search of safety, as Israeli's military operations moved from northern Gaza, to refugee camps in the territory's center, to Khan Younis in the south.
Samira Al-Dahdouh fled her home in northeastern Gaza in December last year, and has been forced to evacuate twice since. She now lives in a tent city in Rafah, near the border with Egypt.
The scale of destruction is devastating.
Authorities in Gaza said more than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed, among them more than 14,000 children, and close to 10,000 women. The UN children's agency UNICEF reported that around 17,000 children in Gaza have been orphaned.
A collapsed health system has seen 32 hospitals and over 50 health centers shut down, either due to being targeted by Israeli attacks or running out of essential medical supplies.
Besides, Gaza is facing the danger of significant spread of infectious diseases.
Israel tightened its siege over Gaza at the start of the war. It has since allowed only small amounts of aid to enter the coastal enclave, first through the Rafah crossing with Egypt, then through Kerem Shalom point with Israel.
But with each passing day of the continuing conflict, the humanitarian situation grows ever more dire.
