Work is underway to setup an innovative new power cable linking Germany to the UK for the first time.

The NeuConnect Interconnector project aims to create the first direct power link between the two countries.

Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) preparatory works were seen being undertaken in the Thames Estuary today (April 10) by a jack-up platform and tug, as captured by this footage filmed from Sheerness in Kent.

Once completed a 725km cable will run between a substation on the Isle of Grain in Kent, UK to a substation in Wilhelmshaven, Lower Saxony region of Germany.

The cable will be one of the longest interconnects in the world, providing enough power for an estimated 1.5 million homes over the project's lifetime.
