Animal reactions to solar eclipse caught on camera at zoo in Texas
Animal reactions to the solar eclipse were caught on camera at a zoo in Texas.
The San Antonio Zoo recorded the peculiar behaviour of its animal residents during the celestial event on April 8.
In one scene, meerkats were observed dancing erratically throughout their habitat during totality, showing their highly social nature.
Known for their cooperative behaviour in the wild, meerkats typically band together in groups called mobs, aiding in defence, foraging, and predator protection.
Another enchanting moment captured on camera showed the whooping cranes engaging in a spirited dance following totality. Renowned for their intricate courtship rituals, whooping cranes use dance to strengthen bonds and signal readiness for mating.
Flamingos also congregated closely during totality, demonstrating their instinctive tendency to seek safety in numbers.
These birds form tight-knit social groups, known as colonies or flocks, which protect predators by making it harder for threats to single out individual birds.
Finally, meerkats retreated into their indoor habitat space shortly before totality, aligning with the zoo hypothesis that diurnal animals would exhibit typical evening activity patterns during the eclipse.
