Thousands of Egyptians flocked on early Wednesday to the Amr ibn al-Aas Mosque, the first and oldest mosque ever built on the land of Egypt, to celebrate the Eid al-Fitr.

People gathered to perform prayers and listen to the sermons in the mosque.

After the end of the Eid prayers, people went out to the streets and began the celebration of the feast that comes after the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): Citizen in Cairo
"The feast this year is different from the previous ones. We have injuries in Gaza every day. We are not able to celebrate the feast in the usual way like before. We are trying to make the children happy but still, our hearts are broken."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): Citizen in Cairo
"We come to the mosque to perform the prayers as you can see the children come to celebrate with us. They perform the prayers and have a happy day."
