Chinese man arrested for battery theft from temporary traffic lights
A man was arrested for the theft of batteries from portable traffic signals in southern China.
CCTV footage filmed in Chengdu City in Sichuan Province on March 19, shows a man on an electric tricycle approaching a portable traffic signal and then expertly dismantling and making off with the devices' battery.
The string of thefts, which quickly followed one another within days, saw an estimated total value of 2,900 yuan (£319) in batteries stolen. This spree not only inflicted financial damage but also severely compromised the integrity of traffic infrastructure, posing a significant risk to road users.
Swift action by the local police force, spurred by reports of the incidents, led to a focused investigation that soon identified Cheng, a man with a history of similar offences. Through diligent detective work, officers managed to arrest Cheng, who confessed to the crimes during interrogation, admitting to the desperate lengths he went to for profit.
Details revealed by Chen Jiaxun, a police officer from the Yangliuhe police station under the jurisdiction of the Shuangliu District Public Security Bureau of Chengdu, painted a picture of a calculated operation. Cheng targeted the temporary traffic lights for several nights, exploiting the reduced vehicle traffic to remove and abscond with the batteries with alarming efficiency.
Further investigations uncovered that Cheng sold the stolen goods to itinerant scrap collectors. With Cheng now in custody and facing criminal charges, efforts are underway to recover the stolen items.
