Passengers and police saved a young father after a sudden cardiac arrest at a railway station in eastern China.

The CCTV footage was filmed in Shanghai on March 25.

A 30-year-old father experienced a sudden cardiac arrest and collapsed on a platform, only to be saved by the quick action of fellow passengers and emergency responders.

On the evening of March 25th, as people bustled about platform 16, the man fell face-down immediately after disembarking from the train.

A colleague travelling with the man and a passing female traveller, a nurse from Nanjing Children’s Hospital, began CPR in a desperate bid to save his life. As they worked, the man’s colleague shouted encouragements, reminding him of his waiting child.

Policeman Xia Runzhou from the Hongqiao Railway Police Station rushed to the scene, noting the urgency as the man's personal belongings scattered around him.

The nurse, recently recovered from surgery herself, assessed the man’s blue lips, ceased breathing, and unresponsive pupils, recognising these as signs of cardiac arrest. She persisted in CPR, soon joined by police and train staff. An AED was brought to the platform, and another doctor traveller expertly used it as everyone present continued the life-saving efforts without relenting.

At 6:17 p.m., the young father’s breathing returned, and by 6:24 p.m., emergency medical services arrived to transport him to Huashan Hospital’s Hongqiao branch. The hospital later confirmed his critical condition was due to malignant arrhythmia, exacerbated by fatigue and possibly poor lifestyle habits.

Fortunately, the timely intervention at the station, including the use of the AED, brought the man back from the brink.

Doctors emphasised the importance of immediate CPR, which likely prevented irreversible brain damage. The father is now recovering, able to open his eyes and move independently, a testament to the critical first minutes following cardiac arrest.
