This is the shocking moment a farm truck crashed into a pickup at a junction in Thailand.

The truck carrying cows was travelling along the highway when the pickup appeared to cut in front of it in Suphanburi province on April 4.

The collision sent the farm truck skidding across the road onto the opposite side, where it crashed into a trailer truck.

Police Major Kalasin Pakwiset of the Mueang Suphanburi Police Station said police found a damaged Toyota Vigo pickup, a cattle truck with a detached steel pen, and a trailer truck with a wrecked driver's cabin.

Eight injured cows were rescued while officers dispatched a crane to clear the wreckage.

Pickup truck driver Sawaeng Rieorang, 62, suffered a head injury and was taken to the Chaophraya Yommarat Hospital hospital for treatment.

Chokthaworn Soijinda, the driver of the trailer truck, said: 'The truck carrying cows suddenly veered into my lane and crashed into me. I talked to the driver and he said a pickup truck had cut in front of him, causing him to lose control because he couldn't apply the brakes in time.'

Farm truck driver Direk Sudta, 50, said he had bought the cows from Lopburi province and was transporting them to a farm in Kanchanaburi when the accident happened.

He said: 'The pickup truck suddenly drove in front of me at the U-turn slot. I steered to avoid it, but I ended up crashing. Many of my cows were injured. Some of the escaped into a temple on the roadside.'

Police Lieutenant Colonel Kalasin said: 'We have reviewed the CCTV footage and found that the pickup truck tried to make a U-turn from the left lane. The driver of the cattle truck was unable to dodge and crashed into him.

'Fortunately, the drivers of the three vehicles were not seriously injured. Only the pickup truck driver suffered a head injury. Officials will investigate the actual cause of the accident in detail in order to proceed with legal action.'

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
