Male red-eared slider woos mate with enchanting handshake display
A male red-eared slider wooed a mate with an enchanting handshake display in central China.
The video was filmed in Zhengzhou City in Henan Province on April 4. A male turtle, in a bid to woo his mate, extended his front claws in front of the female's face and rapidly vibrated them, signalling his strong interest.
Red-eared sliders are known for their unique courtship practices, where the male often approaches the female and performs what looks like a high-frequency "handshake" around her face or head, seemingly caressing her cheeks in a gesture of entreaty. If the female accepts the male's advances, she will sink underwater with him to mate. However, if she rejects his overtures, she might respond aggressively.
This intriguing mating dance can last up to 45 minutes, though the actual mating process takes only about 10 minutes.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
