STORYLINE:
The China-Laos Railway is taking measures to ensure the smooth flow of travelers, amid a surge of passenger traffic during the ongoing Lao New Year holiday.
The Lao New Year is the most important festival for Laotians.
This year's holiday runs from April 13 to 18.
The ticket management system will be optimized online and offline.
To cope with the surging passenger flow, extra train services are provided from April 12 to 19 between the capital Vientiane and the Luang Prabang province in Laos.
The China-Laos Railway connects Kunming in southwest China's Yunnan Province with Vientiane.
Travel on the railway is popular because it is convenient, fast and relatively cheap.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): French passengers
"We are going to Luang Prabang. We go there for Pi Mai (the Lao New Year) to have fun and have some time with friends. It's way cheaper, and I find it safer and it's easier than the plane."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Lao): SONE PHOMMAVONG, Passenger
"My kids love riding the train. If they travel by car or bus, they get dizzy, but they are happy every time we take the train together. They told me that they always want to go to Vang Vieng with me because they enjoy riding the train."
Xaypaserd Moungkhoun is a Lao businessman living in France.
He came back to Laos for the New Year in Luang Prabang province.
SOUNDBITE 3 (Lao): XAYPASERD MOUNGKHOUN, Passenger
"At first, I didn't expect that the train would be this good. Considering the environment at the station and inside the train, I think it's a highly advanced train."
Started operation on Dec. 3, 2021, the 1,035-km China-Laos Railway is a landmark project of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.
It has turned Laos from a land-locked country into a land-linked one.
