This is the amusing moment pollywogs - seafarers who have not yet crossed the equator - took part in a bizarre ceremony to become shellbacks.

Footage shows the girls crawling under a net while being sprayed with water as the opening activity in a vessel on February 18.

The crew also prepared flour mixed with water to pour onto their bodies while fish head was worn as a hat.

Vibrant green algae was also poured on their heads topped with flour and served with a spicy drink and biscuit.

The event concluded with reigning a king and a queen chosen from those who participated.

One of the crew members Shernie Mae Sandel said: 'Pollywogs were turned into shellbacks. We experienced the famous ceremony while crossing the equator.'

Pollywogs and shellbacks refer to traditions practiced aboard naval ships when crossing the equator.

Pollywogs are sailors or naval personnel who have never crossed the equator before. When a ship crosses the equator, a ceremony called the Line-Crossing Ceremony is done.

During this ceremony, pollywogs are subjected to various gag punishments by veteran sailors who have already crossed the line before. This is meant to be an initiation ritual.

After enduring this hazing, the pollywogs are then symbolically transformed into trusty 'shellbacks' - sailors who have crossed the equator and experienced the rite of passage.
