Concerns mounting among Jerusalem residents following Iranian attack
This footage was filmed and produced 14 April 2024.
Concerns have mounted among the residents in Jerusalem following Iran's attack on Israel last Saturday, prompting calls for de-escalation.
Iran launched a large-scale drone and missile attack toward Israel late on Saturday in response to Israel's attack on Iran's Damascus consulate on April 1 which killed seven Islamic Revolutionary Guards officers, including two top commanders.
On Sunday, Israel announced the reopening of its airspace after Iran's attack, and told residents that there was no need to stay in shelters.
In West Jerusalem, public transportation and shops resumed their services on Sunday. However, the streets were somewhat less bustling than normal for this time of year, and some residents expressed a lingering fear of escalation.
"I think it's just a different kind of magnitude to the whole situation. Definitely, much more fear. Schools are canceled today. I'm a student in university, all my exams are canceled today. It definitely feels like we're dealing with a bigger enemy, I'd say," said Zoe, a resident.
Others urged the Israeli government to take action to reduce the tension, calling for a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
"I hope the government will find a way not to increase the tension but to de-escalate it and to avoid things like that in the future. I hope that they will be able to make a deal, to bring back the hostages, and to make a ceasefire as long as the security of Israel will remain," said Roy, another resident.
"I think that the government needs to agree to whatever it takes, ceasefire and stop the war to bring the hostages now home," said Itay, a resident.
The Israeli Defense Forces announced in a statement that educational activities would resume in most parts of the country starting from Monday. However, in communities near Israel's northern border and the Gaza Strip, schooling will resume with certain restrictions, it specified.
Restrictions on gatherings have also been lifted.
