South Korea's prime minister resigns after his party's election defeat
This footage was filmed and produced 8 April 2024.
South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo resigned after the ruling People's Power Party's landslide defeat in parliamentary elections, several local media reported today citing the presidential office.
All senior presidential secretaries, including the chief of staff and the chief political secretary, followed suit, except for the secretaries of the National Security Bureau.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said he will humbly accept the will of the people as expressed in the parliamentary elections.
He also indicated that he will do his best to reform state affairs and stabilise the economy and people's livelihoods, according to the Presidential Office.
The quadrennial polls to elect the 300-member National Assembly were held at 14,259 polling stations across the Asian country on Wednesday, with voters casting their ballots for 254 constituency seats and 46 proportional representation seats.
The country's largest liberal bloc, which includes the main opposition Democratic Party and the minority Reconstruction Korea Party, won more than three-fifths of the seats in the parliamentary elections, widely seen as a mid-term referendum to assess President Yoon's handling of state affairs.
