Colombia's capital began a water rationing plan on Thursday because of a severe drought that threatens to cause an energy crisis.
The measure affects around 10 million people living in the Colombian capital and surrounding municipalities.

The official decision was taken in response to an alarming drop in the levels of the reservoirs that provide drinking water to the city and surrounding areas.

The cuts are rotating. The authorities have divided the city into nine well-defined zones. Each zone suffers 24 hours of water shortages every 9 days.

The measure is indefinite. But the service interruptions could be even more severe in the future, warned the local Water and Aqueduct Company. Sanctions are even being considered to avoid wastage.
The situation is considered critical in the Chingaza paramo system, which supplies between 70% and 80% of the water consumed in Bogota and neighbouring municipalities. The level is at 16%.

The government has started an awareness campaign to reduce water consumption, especially to stop wasting water. In Bogota, washing cars on public roads and watering public and private gardens is already forbidden. "There are no pools because it is a cold climate," the environmentalist said.
