Bridges Are Unprotected From Ship Collisions and Collapse in Vancouver, Canada
[Note: undated footage]
Many Canadian bridges are also unprotected from ship collisions and potential collapse. It was not until the 1980s that any consideration was given to the design and construction of Canadian bridges in terms of potential ship or vessel impacts with bridge supports. Major bridges such as Vancouver's Lions Gate Bridge and Ironworkers Memorial Bridge are at high risk when you consider the volume of major cargo ships, cruise ships and other vessels using the ports of Vancouver daily. The first Narrows Bridge aka Ironworkers Memorial Bridge collapsed during construction and took the lives of many ironworkers involved in the construction. With the lack of bridge protections, Canada could easily see another collapse given the marine traffic today and the annual increases in the volume of marine traffic and increased size of vessels entering under the bridges daily. Currently, the port of Vancouver sees approximately 9 cargo ships per day (3000 annually) pass under local bridges into the port and depart with pressure to increase these vessel numbers. Not to mention the risk of a floating gas/fuel station in the middle of the Vancouver Harbor (Burrard Inlet).
This footage illustrates the Vancouver Waterfront, Harbor, Inlet and a few of many shipping terminals - also the Lion's Gate Bridge and entry points to the Vancouver ports and Shipping lanes.
