Baby lemurs join family in zoo in Thailand
Three baby lemurs joined their family in a zoo in Thailand.
Footage shows the tiny newborn primates with remarkably long striped tails clinging to their mums while zoo officials and visitors fed them at Chonburi province's Khao Kheow Open Zoo on April 9.
Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy said they planned the feeding activity for the celebration of the Songkran Festival.
He said: ‘Three ring-tailed lemurs were born on March 3, and their genders are still unknown.
‘These baby lemurs joined the pack at the exhibition zone to eat and underwent a health check by the vet team, revealing they are healthy and well cared for by their mother.
‘They are still clinging to their mother's chest and back, but occasionally, they climb around and play on the tree branches.
‘Currently, the zoo is home to 25 ring-tailed lemurs.'
The ring-tailed lemur is listed in Appendix I of CITES and is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List.
Narongwit invited tourists to join the Songkran event.
He said: 'The event will be held with the theme of ‘temple in the garden' where visitors can pay respects to the Buddhist relic from Sri Lanka.
'Additionally, they can partake in temple fair-themed activities such as animal mascot dance, music performance, food stall, balloon dart game, dunk tank, rifle range, lucky draw, and creating sand pagoda.
'Furthermore, a Green Zoo Market will be organised, featuring OTOP (One Tambon One Product) products, showcasing local items.'
These activities were scheduled to happen from April 13 to 16.
