This is the shocking moment a car crashed through a pharmacy in Thailand.

The driver allegedly stole the keys to drive the black BMW 630d GT to a market in Nakhon Pathom province on April 3.

However, he reportedly took painkillers before the drive, causing him to crash into the Ganesh Pharmacy in Nonthaburi at around 6:36 am.

CCTV footage shows the black BMW pulling into the driveway and ploughing into the empty drug store, toppling shelves and destroying the counter.

It then reversed, ripping the glass doors from their frame before speeding away.

The driver, identified by police as 'Ake', was later taken by his furious boss Anutra, 55, to the Plai Bang Police Station following the crash.

The bungling driver was made to pay pharmacy owner A Namsamut, 32, for damages worth around one million baht (22,000 GBP).

He said: 'I had just taken four painkiller pills and was feeling sleepy. That's why I crashed into the pharmacy.

'I returned the car, but I did not tell my boss because I was afraid she would fire me.'

Anutra said she wanted to negotiate with the pharmacy owner and would let her insurance company handle the compensation.

Meanwhile, pharmacy owner A said: 'The incident made me feel unsafe, but I am relieved to know that I was not being targetted intentionally.'

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
