Planes battled through flash floods at the Dubai International Airport on Tuesday as heavy rain battered the United Arab Emirates.

Footage shows a Boeing 737 operated by Fly Dubai powering through the deluge at the aviation hub, which temporarily diverted all inbound flights and cancelled takeoffs.

A spokesman said: 'The airport is working hard with its response teams and service partners to restore normal operations and minimise inconvenience to our customers. We urge guests to check directly with the airline to obtain the latest information on the status of their flight, allow significant extra travel time to the airport and use the Dubai metro where possible.'

Officials said in Oman, nine schoolchildren and their driver died on Sunday when their vehicle was washed away by the floodwaters in Samad A'Shan.

The National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) told residents to leave the safety of their homes only in 'cases of extreme necessity'.

The authority also advised motorists to park vehicles in 'distant, safe, and elevated locations away from areas prone to flooding'.
